Best apps for recomp
The best calorie trackers for a recomp.
For a recomp you need a tracker that sets calories near maintenance, treats protein as a minimum, and tracks your body fat, waist or photos, not just the scale. Doubles is the pick if you won't weigh food. MacroFactor is the pick for precise data, Carbon for coach-style check-ins, and Cronometer if you want a free version.

We make Doubles, so read this knowing that. To keep it fair, every fact about another app comes from its own App Store page or website, checked October 19, 2026, and we say where the others do better. Prices change, so check before you buy. Spot a mistake? Email [email protected] and we'll fix it.
What we looked for
- Calories at or a little under maintenance, not a weight-loss setup that keeps cutting.
- A protein minimum of about 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg (0.7 to 1 g per lb), treated as a floor.
- Tracks body composition, not just weight: body fat, lean mass, waist or photos. On a recomp the scale barely moves.
- Doesn't add workout calories back or push you to chase the scale.
- Easy enough to keep up for months. A recomp is slow, so the app you'll still use in week 12 beats the most precise one.
- Price for a year.
The picks
Each app gets the label it earns against the list above. Prices are US, from each App Store page.
Doubles
Best if you won't weigh foodDoubles has a Recomp plan: calories about 5% under maintenance (or right at it), protein at 2.0 g per kg, and it asks that you strength train at least twice a week. You log by saying, snapping or scanning, and your AI partner remembers your days. Body fat and lean mass from Apple Health sit next to your weight, and you can track your waist, photos or scans instead.
Watch out: iPhone only. No free version. Covers calories and protein first, not detailed micronutrients. It's also the newest app here.
iPhone · $69.99/yr or $12.99/mo · 7-day free trial
MacroFactor
Best for precise, adaptive targetsMacroFactor re-estimates your expenditure every week from what you log and how your weight trends, then adjusts your targets. Set a goal to maintain, pick a custom macro program, and its verified food database and micronutrient detail make the data trustworthy.
Watch out: Logging is search-first; AI photo logging is in beta. No free version.
iPhone and Android · $71.99/yr, $47.99 per 6 months or $11.99/mo · 7-day free trial
Carbon Diet Coach
Best for coach-style check-insBuilt by Dr. Layne Norton and dietitian Keith Kraker. You choose to lose fat, build muscle or maintain, and weekly check-ins adjust your macros and explain why. It has a high-protein diet preference, charts body fat and lean body mass, and reads weight and body fat from Apple Health.
Watch out: The highest yearly price here.
iPhone and Android · $99.99/yr, $59.99 per 6 months or $11.99/mo
Cronometer
Best free option, and best for micronutrientsCronometer's free version includes barcode scanning and a database of 1.1M+ verified foods, and it tracks calories, macros and 95+ vitamins and minerals. Gold adds photo and voice logging.
Watch out: You set your recomp calories and protein yourself. The free version has ads.
iPhone, Android and web · Free, or Gold $59.99/yr or $10.99/mo
MyFitnessPal
Best for the biggest food databaseThe largest food database here (20.5M+ foods, including restaurant dishes), custom macro goals with Premium, and connections to 40+ trackers.
Watch out: Exercise can change your daily goal, which can quietly erase a small deficit. Premium is the priciest monthly plan here.
iPhone, Android and web · Free, or Premium $79.99/yr or $19.99/mo
We left out Cal AI and Lose It!. Both are quick to log with, but their App Store pages describe weight-loss plans, not a maintenance-calorie setup or body-composition tracking.
What a recomp needs from you
The app is the easy part. A recomp works when you eat near maintenance, hit your protein most days, lift with progressive overload at least two or three times a week, and sleep. Judge it by your waist, body fat, photos and lifts over 8 to 12 weeks. How to recomp, step by step.
Who shouldn't use Doubles
- You're on Android or want to log on the web. Doubles is iPhone only for now.
- You want a free tracker. After the 7-day trial, Doubles is paid.
- You want to weigh and log every gram, or track lots of micronutrients. Doubles covers calories and protein first, plus carbs, fat and fiber.
- You want workout programming. Doubles reads your workouts but doesn't plan them.
- You're pregnant, have a medical condition or have a history of disordered eating. Talk to a professional first; a calorie tracker may not be right for you.
